Ischemia - Lack of blood flow

Ischemia refers to lack of or disruption of blood flow to the baby. When blood flow is reduced or stopped, the brain and other organs are deprived of oxygen and nutrients. Ischemia results in hypoxia which may lead to acidosis, brain cell death, and permanent brain injury.

There are several mechanisms that can cause ischemia, including:
